The short hair and dress-like garment suggest this could be a boy, as young boys often wore dresses until about age 5 in the late 19th century. Seated formally on a cushioned chair or ottoman, with hands resting calmly was typical of studio portrait conventions meant to convey composure and innocence. The skirt, long sleeves, and high neckline are consistent with children’s fashion from the 1880s to early 1900s.  The fabric appears light, possibly cotton or linen, with minimal ornamentation. The dark ankle boots with visible lacing or buttons were common for both boys and girls during this period.  Their sturdy construction suggests middle-class practicality. The Photographer, H.Q. Morton was an active and respected photographer in Providence, Rhode Island during the late 19th century, known especially for his scenic and studio work around the 1870s - 1880s. Measures approx. 2 1/2" x 4" Condition Good condition with some defects and wear as shown in photos.
