Early 20th Century Hopi coil baskets are a revered form of Native American art and utility, originating from the Hopi people of northeastern Arizona. These baskets are primarily crafted by women on Second Mesa (villages like Shungopavi, Shipaulovi, and Mishongnovi) using traditional coiling techniques. The process involves bundling galleta grass (sühü) or similar fibers for the core and sewing it with strips of yucca leaf (mooho, from Yucca angustifolia) for the stitches. Natural colors—white, yellow, and green—come from the yucca, while red and black are often achieved with commercial dyes, though many weavers now incorporate natural dyes for authenticity. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Buena Vista Trading Post  owner Rob Wood calls upon his family’s more than fifty years of experience as American Indian art dealers. Len grew the business in Laguna, moving into a number of different buildings in town before settling in for decades neighboring the Laguna Beach Museum of Art.
