The reverse retains its original backing with an early handwritten inscription reading: “Honneur de Pourville 172_ – 1796” The final date 1796 is clearly legible. The birth year appears to read circa 1728, though the first date is partially faded, consistent with age and the use of graphite on textile backing. Pourville refers to a historic village in Normandy, France, and the phrasing “de Pourville” indicates association with that place.
