A Note on the History Russell Jennings Manufacturing Co. of Chester, Connecticut, was one of America's premier auger bit makers, renowned for its warranted crucible steel spur auger bits and its iconic patented three-tier wooden storage boxes. The Irwin Auger Bit Co. of Ohio was their chief competitor, founded in 1885 and eventually the largest auger bit maker in the world. The two companies were never merged — Russell Jennings was acquired by Stanley Works in 1944. This set tells a working craftsman's story: the original Russell Jennings box survived intact, while one bit was kept original, and the remaining 12 were replaced over time with Irwin USA equivalents, as was common practice in active carpentry shops of the era.
