Wonderful early-style Stanley No. 594 soft-face hammer featuring a steel center body, aged hickory handle, and distinctive amber-colored replaceable striking faces. Approximately 12 inches long overall. The head retains the 594 and USA markings. The No. 594 has a long history in Stanley's tool line. A 1941 Stanley Tools catalog (34th Edition) specifically lists the No. 594 Soft Face Hammer. Stanley described these hammers as having renewable tips made from “Stanloid,” a tough and resilient celluloid-composition material. The catalog states that the steel center body was fitted with an “Evertite” processed hickory handle, and that the striking tips were originally amber. This example shows substantial authentic age and workshop character, including oxidation and patina to the steel, considerable wear and discoloration to the soft faces, and checking, splitting and surface wear to the wooden handle. Approximate age: The No. 594 is documented in Stanley's catalog by 1941, and the materials and construction of this well-aged USA-marked example are consistent with an older generation of the model. A circa 1940s–1950s date is plausible, potentially making it approximately 70–85+ years old, but the exact manufacturing year cannot be confirmed from the markings alone.
