A substantial, showy piece of turn-of-the-century German porcelain — the kind of tray that anchors a sideboard or a china cabinet shelf. The mold form, the airbrushed shading, and the rose decoration are all in the RS Prussia manner, and the tray displays beautifully alongside that porcelain. Large antique porcelain celery tray, 12 inches long, in an elongated oval form with a deeply molded blown-out body, applied dogwood blossoms around the rim, and pierced openwork handles at each end. A substantial, showy piece of turn-of-the-century German porcelain — the kind of tray that anchors a sideboard or a china cabinet shelf. The decoration works in layers. The ground is airbrushed in soft blue deepening to teal down the center and fading to warm cream at the edges, with molded maple leaves and star flowers emerging from the tinting. Over that sit transfer-printed roses — full pink cabbage roses at the corners and a large cream and yellow bloom at the heart of the tray — finished with gilt tracery, gold daisies, and gold outlining along the molded ribs. Six applied blossoms with gold-dotted centers ring the rim in relief, each hand-touched with pale green and gold. The mold form, the airbrushed shading, and the rose decoration are all in the RS Prussia manner, and the tray displays beautifully alongside that porcelain. It is offered as unmarked and unattributed: there is no factory mark on the base and nothing appears under ultraviolet light. Many German and Bohemian factories produced work in this style for the American market between roughly 1900 and 1910, and I'd rather describe it accurately than claim more than I can prove. CONDITION: Very good antique condition. No cracks, no chips to the body, no repairs. Two faint lines are visible in the glaze — one through the center rose, one near the upper handle. These are firing lines from manufacture, not damage: a fingernail passes over them smoothly, and the tray rings clear when tapped. Light wear to the gold, most noticeable along the raised ribs and on a few applied petals. Some light age soiling to the unglazed foot rim, as expected.
