The small glazed elephant is marked JAPAN on the underside. Six elephants in six different materials, collected rather than bought as a set: a large ceramic elephant with raised trunk on a naturalistic oval base, two carved wood elephants, a figure covered entirely in small applied seashells, a small glazed ceramic elephant, and a brass elephant carrying a pierced vessel on its back. Putting them together is the point. The same animal appears here as a naturalistic sculpture, as a piece of stylised woodwork with the ears reduced to flat discs, as a souvenir surface for shell work, and as a functional brass holder. Six makers in different places and materials all solved the same shape, and the trunk is the only feature none of them would give up. The two wood carvings are worth comparing directly. One is naturalistic with the legs cut free of the body, which is the hard way to do it, and the other is a single mass with the legs only suggested. The second is stronger and travels better, and it is the one that still has no chips. The brass piece is not solid decoration. It carries an open vessel on its back with holes through it, so it was made to hold something, most likely as an incense burner or a small candle holder. A US quarter appears in the group photographs for scale. The small glazed elephant is marked JAPAN and the other five carry no marks at all, so I am listing them as a collection rather than attributing any of them.
