The finish is the interesting decision. Rather than a smooth polished surface, this was given a deliberately rough, weathered texture that reads as carved limestone left out in the weather. That look belongs to the twentieth century revival of Romanesque and early medieval devotional sculpture, when artists turned away from the smooth, sweet nineteenth century religious statue and back toward something blockier and older. The roughness is the argument. The pose is the Eleousa, the tenderness type, where the mother's cheek comes down to the child's rather than the two figures facing front. It arrived in Western art from Byzantine icons, and it is the single most emotionally direct arrangement in the whole Marian repertoire. The formal, frontal, enthroned Madonna is majesty. This one is affection. No maker's mark anywhere on it, so I am not attributing it. Condition: No breaks or losses found. The base is sound and the figure stands without rocking. The stone textured surface carries even soiling in the recesses, which suits the finish. No mark found on the underside. A coin and a tape appear in the photographs.
