Antique Southeast Asian Bronze Ritual Hand Bell – Khmer Style Unusual and highly decorative antique copper-alloy/bronze hand bell, believed to be Southeast Asian and displaying strong Khmer stylistic influence. The previous owner identified the piece as originating from Thailand; Cambodia or northeastern Thailand are both possibilities. The bell measures approximately 9 inches tall by 6 inches across and has weight and a comfortable hand-held form. The elaborate figural handle depicts a stylized guardian or deity wearing a prominent necklace and ornate headdress, surrounded by curling scroll-like elements. The rounded bell body is extensively decorated with raised figural, animal and scrolling motifs along with numerous applied or raised bosses showing contrasting golden-bronze coloration. The hollow body has a long sounding slit along the bottom. Three small integral feet allow the bell to stand upright when not being held, an especially interesting feature of its construction. The surface retains a deep, naturally aged brown patina with lighter areas from handling and wear. Casting irregularities and surface wear are present throughout and are consistent with the handmade nature and apparent age of the piece. Based on its style, construction and overall appearance, we believe this is likely late 19th to early 20th century , although the precise date and place of manufacture have not been independently authenticated.
