Artist: The author of this series of paintings is the outstanding Soviet animal artist and master of scientific illustration, Vasily Vatagin. Description and Composition of Plants The poster illustrates the appearance of a pine forest-blueberry or heather forest. The lower part depicts in detail the characteristic plants of the understory of such a forest (from left to right): Blueberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) is a small shrub with characteristic glaucous-black berries. Sheep fescue (Festuca ovina) is a densely bushy grass with thin leaves. Pasqueflower (Pulsatilla patens) is an early spring plant with large purple flowers covered in dense pubescence. Heather (Calluna vulgaris) is an evergreen shrub with small purple flowers. Hawkweed (Hieracium pilosella) is a perennial with a basal rosette of leaves and yellow flower heads. Lingonberry (Vaccinium vitis-idaea) is an evergreen shrub with leathery leaves and red berries. Ecological Features Pine forests often grow on poor, sandy soils. Pine is a light-loving tree, so under its canopy there is enough light for the development of shrubs and herbs, many of which (like blueberries or lingonberries) are of great economic and medicinal value.
