Frederick Marriott (1860–1941) –  Falaise by Night Original early 20th-century color mezzotint by noted British artist and printmaker  Frederick Marriott (1860–1941) . This atmospheric nighttime scene depicts  Falaise, Normandy, France , with figures gathered in a town square surrounded by historic buildings, illuminated shop windows, a fountain and glowing streetlamp beneath a deep blue night sky. The work is  pencil signed “F. Marriott” at the lower right  and bears a handwritten  “26” in pencil at the lower left . The exact significance of the number 26 is unknown; it may relate to the impression, edition or an earlier inventory notation. It is not represented here as an edition number because no documented edition size has been confirmed. The image has a visible  depressed plate impression consistent with an original intaglio printing process . Documented Title & Period Extensive research identified this composition as Frederick Marriott's  Falaise by Night . The identical image was reproduced under that title in the  May 1917 issue of  International Studio , in Malcolm C. Salaman's article  “The Art of the Colour-Print.”  The contemporary publication captions the work: “FALAISE BY NIGHT – COLOUR-PRINT BY FREDERICK MARRIOTT, A.R.E.” Because the work was published by May 1917, the composition dates to  1917 or earlier . It is listed here as  circa 1917 . Marriott was known for etching, aquatint and mezzotint. Contemporary writing about his work specifically discusses his production of  color prints from mezzotint plates  and his effective use of strong contrasts between light, shadow and artificial illumination—the characteristics prominently displayed in  Falaise by Night . Artist Frederick Marriott (British, 1860–1941)  was a painter, etcher and printmaker known for architectural subjects, European street scenes and atmospheric color prints. He worked in etching, aquatint and mezzotint and was associated with the  Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers (R.E.) . Marriott also served as the first head of the art school at Goldsmiths in London. Measurements Printed image:  approximately 13¾" W × 11½" H Overall framed size:  approximately 21¾" W × 20" H Measurements are approximate. Condition Antique/pre-owned condition consistent with age. The paper shows  overall age toning/discoloration, spotting/foxing and other age-related surface wear . The print is housed behind glass in an older wood frame showing substantial age-related wear, including finish loss, scratches, scuffs, nicks and other signs of use. The old paper backing remains present on the reverse and shows age, creasing, discoloration and wear. The artwork has  not been removed from the frame , and areas concealed by the frame have not been inspected. Please review all photographs carefully for the exact condition of the artwork, paper, glass, frame and backing.  Photos are considered part of the description.
