Beautiful original Edwardian Christmas greeting card published by Raphael Tuck & Sons Ltd., dating to approximately 1901–1910. This unusually elaborate novelty card features ornate die-cut edges and a multi-panel design that unfolds in several directions to create a striking display. The front depicts an elegant 18th-century French Rococo Revival–style lady within an oval portrait medallion, surrounded by raised pink roses, flowing ornamental lines and richly embossed gilt/gold-tone detailing. The interior contains printed Christmas greetings and the lines: “Past and Present wound in one, Do make a garland for the Heart.” These lines are taken from Alfred, Lord Tennyson’s “The Miller’s Daughter.” The final panel reads: “A bright and happy Christmas. Sunny skies and fragrant flowers Fill with joy these Christmas hours.” The back bears Tuck’s Artistic Series trademark and royal-warrant wording naming King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra. It is also marked Raphael Tuck & Sons Ltd., London, Paris and New York; designed at the studios in England and printed at the Fine Art Works in Saxony; “The Gem Series—Patent.” The card is uninscribed, with no handwritten name, personal message or postal markings. Condition: Very good displayable antique condition overall, especially considering its age of more than 115 years. All folding sections are present and remain connected. It displays expected age-related toning, scattered foxing/speckling, light edge and corner wear, small nicks and stress along the folds, and normal surface wear or darkening to portions of the gilt decoration. Please enlarge and review all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the condition description. A wonderful piece for a Raphael Tuck collector, antique Christmas collection or historical ephemera display. Its remarkable paper engineering and decorative printing would also provide beautiful inspiration for card makers and paper artists.
