The front of the round medal features a detailed raised portrait of Pope John Paul II in papal vestments, holding the papal cross and giving a blessing. The inscription reads “JOANNES PAULUS II.” The reverse features a detailed relief depiction of St. Peter’s Square and St. Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican, with radiating lines above the basilica. The medal is marked ITALY along the bottom. The medal hangs from a silver-tone snake-style chain with lobster clasp. Clasp/tag is marked S.H. No sterling or other precious-metal fineness marks were observed, so metal content is unknown and the necklace is being described as silver tone. The darker aged finish and recessed patina give the medal especially nice definition and vintage character.
