She captured the Blue Riband on her maiden voyage and became known for her speed, engineering and lavish French Art Deco interiors. The swimming pool was originally a first-class facility. French Line later renamed first class “Cabin Class.” After the United States entered World War II, Normandie was seized in New York and renamed USS Lafayette for conversion to a troop transport. She caught fire and capsized at Pier 88 in February 1942.
