The form is a low, wide cone that flares from a narrow foot to a softly irregular rim, so the cup sits lightly in the hand and shows its interior at a glance. It is hand-formed, and the slight waver of the rim and the unevenness of the wall are part of the character of this kind of ware. The body is covered in a thick, opaque white feldspathic glaze of the type. Across the whole surface the glaze is pitted with countless small pinholes, the texture Japanese potters call yuzu-hada, or citron skin. Where the flame reached the pot in the kiln the glaze has flushed into scarlet, apricot and deep brown, and there are darker scorched passages that pool and drift over the wall and into the interior. Around the lower body, softly drawn arc-shaped motifs in iron pigment show through the glaze. The base is left unglazed to reveal the coarse, pale clay, and it carries two impressed seals: a vertical seal of characters and a smaller oval one. The seals have not been positively identified, and the cup is offered without an attribution to a named potter. The cup measures approximately 5 cm (2.0 in) across the rim and 3 cm (1.2 in) high, and weighs only 22 g, so the wall is thin and the cup is very light for its size. No box is included. Condition: Pre-owned, in good condition. No chips and no hairline cracks. The surface shows the pinholes, iron spotting and kiln scorching described above; these are features of the firing and not damage. No box is included.
