SUMMARY: This lovely pin and pendant is gorgeous, small but so powerful. WHAT IS GREAT ABOUT IT: James Ross Cheama is famous for the design of this pin pendant, which is depicted in one book in the form of a squash necklace made of these images. The image is a sun face but as the central part of the Zia New Mexico symbol and it is mosaic inlay work of the sun face, surrounded with tiny hand twisted wire and the four wires in the form of a cross framing it. It has a nice bail so it can be worn as a pendant. It is small so has a delicate appearance but it is not delicate; it's the sort of piece one could wear daily and which could become a signature piece. BACKGROUND: James Ross Cheama is the grandson of Anita Dewa and Leroy Dewa, son of Ola Ericho and Clifford Cheama, born in 1976, he has had several museum exhibitions, even in Japan, and has been carried in the best of galleries. The concept of the sun face has two themes. One is that of the combination of the family into one, where each person is unique and special but the family together is critical. And the other the sun rise and sun set, day and night. Both concepts are crucial to the Zuni sense of continuity, stability, and relationship to and within the world. CONDITION: Excellent vintage, wearable and collectible. MEASUREMENTS: • diameter 3/4" • sterling silver .925, natural stones and shells: turquoise, coral, back, mother of pearl • unsigned but guaranteed to be the work of James Ross Cheama • not marked for metal content, but it's sterling silver .925 SUMMARY: This lovely pin and pendant is gorgeous, small but so powerful.
