View Antique 1860 Map of South America with Proposed Route of Panama Canal Mitchell with current marketplace pricing, condition, product images and item details. MAP CONDITION: Very good with uniform appearance and color on interior. Map is slightly loose and able to move under the map. This can expose the left edge where you can see the minor white border chipping where the page was removed from the atlas. img{max-width:100%} This is an Antique 1860 Mitchell Map of South America with Proposed Route of Panama Canal included as an inset map at the lower right. Title / Description:   Map of South America Showing its Political Divisions PROVENANCE / PUBLISHER : Engraved by W. Williams, Philadelphia; Mitchell Atlas (see closeup of annotation at lower left of page).  This map appears to be from the same atlas from which we listed a composite map of several South American countries. DATE:   1860 is the date that appears on the map (see closeup of annotation at lower left of page) MATTE SIZE: 16" x 19" IMAGE SIZE / MATTE OPENING:   11 1/2" x 14" MAP CONDITION:   Very good with uniform appearance and color on interior.  Map is slightly loose and able to move under the map.  This can expose the left edge where you can see the minor white border chipping where the page was removed from the atlas.  The clear protective covering would need to be removed to stabilize the position of the map with respect to the opening in the matte. MATTE / BOARD CONDITION:   Some small tears and scuffs in clear plastic wrapper that appear to have had no impact on the matte condition.  There is a seller's price tag with $55 on the front of the plastic with a $70 price written on the plastic on the back with a Sharpie. The geography covered by the maps includes: Map of France  Map of Australia South America Straits of Magellan Composite of three maps with New Granada, Venezuela, and Guiana Peru and Equador Argentine Confederation Map of South America French map of Peru, annotated in French United States US Map, Western Half German map of North America County Map of Virginia and West Virginia by Mitchell County Map of Kentucky and Tennessee   Northwest US   The seller and her husband specialized in this area for many years.  They were quite knowledgeable in this area.  She told me that she and her husband would try to preserve atlases where feasible but that most of the lot I purchased were from atlases where the  maps were in very good condition, but the bindings were too poor to repair, so the maps were stripped for individual sale.  In some cases, the atlas was either noted on the map, or in other cases was noted by the seller.  Where available I have included that information as well as any other background information I received.  The seller assured me that the maps were all from atlases or other sources published over 100 years ago, generally from the 19th Century or older, and we will guarantee your satisfaction in that regard. Eight of the ten maps are matted.  All are protected in plastic and will be shipped that way.  The outer sizes of the mattes and the backing stock on the ten maps vary in the longest dimension from 12" to 17", and in the shortest dimension from 16" to 20".
