Paintings, ukiyo-e prints and illustrated books are read as the fashion media of their day, while court nobles, wealthy merchants, courtesans, young men about town, kabuki actors and townswomen all appear as the people who actually wore and shaped these styles. Four short columns widen the frame: the nanban clothing samurai fell for, the "Japonse rock" kimono exported to Europe, imported watari-gire fabrics and their influence, and the kamishimo collected by Siebold at the Dutch trading post. Together they show a textile culture in constant exchange with the wider world.
