A Japanese Buddhist pilgrimage scroll with 37 Buddhist temple calligraphic signatures. The original owner of this made a pilgrimage to all of these temples. Historically they walked from one temple to the next.    A Japanese Buddhist pilgrimage scroll with 37 Buddhist temple calligraphic signatures.  The original owner of this made a pilgrimage to all of these temples.  Historically they walked from one temple to the next. Once inside the temple, the pilgrim would pray then have one of the Buddhist priests sign his scroll with the temples red signature stamp (hanko)    The written center is silk. The matting around the writing is embroidered silk brocade, backed with Japanese washi paper.  It comes with a custom made to fit, paulownia wood storage box.  The owner of this valued this scroll so highly that to add extra protection, they had the a protective storage box made for the storage box.  This scroll is stored inside two boxes, a box inside a box. (Shown in the last photos) The total length / width is 74 1/2 x 23 1/4 inches  The artwork in the middle, (the honshi) is 49 x 18 inches   We have been selling Japanese antiques for 28 years and are shipping from Los Angeles We have other antique/vintage Japanese items on eBay.
