Production Style: Kutani / Japanese Art Porcelain. Color: Multicolor. Each plate bears a small hand-painted iron-red mark on the reverse. Material: Porcelain. Set Includes: 4 Plates. Overallgood to very good antique condition, especially considering the age of the set. Beautiful matched set of four antique Japanese porcelain plates dating to the Meiji period, likely circa 1880–1900 . Each approximately 8 3/4-inch (22.2 cm) plate is individually hand decorated with an exceptionally detailed Japanese landscape featuring colorful birds among flowering branches overlooking water, mountains, trees and traditional architecture. The decoration combines delicate polychrome overglaze enamels with finely rendered brown and black line work, soft blue landscape details and extensive gilt accents. Pink, green, yellow, white, blue, iron-red and gold create an especially attractive palette. The elaborate borders feature intricate hand-painted iron-red, brown and gilt ornamentation. Close inspection reveals numerous differences in the birds, flowers, branches and landscape details from plate to plate, giving each piece its own hand-painted character while maintaining a cohesive matched design. The decoration is consistent with Meiji-period Kutani/Kaga porcelain, particularly the richly colored and gilded Shōza-style tradition . Each plate bears a small hand-painted iron-red mark on the reverse. The mark has not been conclusively identified, so no specific artist or workshop attribution is being made. Condition Overall good to very good antique condition , especially considering the age of the set. Two plates have small chips along the rim , shown clearly in the photographs. The other two plates do not show comparable rim chips. There is expected age-related wear to the gilt and painted decoration, along with minor surface wear and small firing/manufacturing irregularities associated with antique hand-decorated porcelain. Please examine all photographs carefully, particularly the close-up photographs of the rim damage, as they form an important part of the condition description. These plates are approximately 125–145 years old and are being offered as antique decorative/collectible porcelain. A striking surviving set of four finely decorated Japanese Meiji-period plates and an excellent display set for a collection of Kutani, Kaga, Meiji-era Japanese porcelain or antique Asian decorative arts .
