Vintage Coach Flatiron Sling 4179 — Black Leather, Made in USA An exceptional example of one of Coach’s lesser-seen late-1990s designs: the Flatiron Sling, style 4179, from the short-lived Flatiron collection introduced during the Holiday 1997 era. The Flatiron collection was a small group of bags released during an especially interesting transitional period for Coach. While retaining the substantial leather construction associated with vintage Coach, the collection experimented with softer, more sculptural silhouettes and an unusual architectural strap attachment that became one of the line’s signatures. The Flatiron Sling is perhaps the most distinctive of the group, combining a generous drawstring body with a dramatic tapered profile and long adjustable leather strap. Original Coach catalog material described style 4179 as an “extra-capacity bag with drawstring closure,” fully lined with a 39-inch adjustable strap. Known colors included Black, Mahogany and Toffee. This example is black leather with brass-tone hardware and includes its original Coach leather hangtag. The interior is fully lined in the wonderful repeating Coach-logo fabric associated with this period. One of my favorite details is that the lining can be pulled outward extensively, making the interior much easier to inspect and gently clean than many vintage bags. It also includes an interior zip pocket and leather Coach creed. Condition This bag is in remarkably beautiful vintage condition, especially considering its age. It has been carefully cleaned and conditioned, and the leather responded exceptionally well. The exterior remains supple, rich and structurally sound with very little obvious wear. There is minor wear at the bottom and to portions of the leather drawstring, along with a few extremely small areas of discoloration or surface variation. These are quite difficult to notice during normal use and became apparent to me primarily because of how closely I inspected the bag while cleaning and conditioning it. No major structural issues noted. The body retains its shape beautifully, the strap remains strong, and the drawstring functions as intended. I rarely come across bags from the Flatiron collection, and even more rarely one this old that presents this cleanly. This is also one of the few vintage pieces from my collection that I have personally carried, which gave me the chance to appreciate how unusual and functional the design is in person.
