A pair of Egyptian Revival drop earrings of the 1920s, from the wave of Egyptian-themed costume jewelry that followed the opening of Tutankhamun's tomb in 1922. Each earring centers a large molded carnelian-red glass SCARAB, its wing cases and markings picked out in bright green enamel, prong set in a die-struck gilt brass openwork frame. Below hang two small oval red glass beads - each carved on the reverse with pseudo-hieroglyphic intaglio - and a red glass triangle in a gilt openwork drop. A densely Egyptian piece: scarab, hieroglyphs, and a papyrus-form drop on one earring. The pair carries no mark of any kind. The construction - the die-struck brass, the findings, the stone settings and the pressed glass - matches marked Czechoslovakian pieces that came in with it, so the origin is attributed rather than proven. SIZE (approximate): 2 3/4 in. overall, measured from the top of the ear wire to the bottom of the drop. 5/8 in. at the widest point. STYLE: Egyptian Revival / Art Deco. Gilt brass with molded red glass and enamel. AGE (approximate): 1920s-1930s. CONDITION: Very Good. Pierced lever-back findings, both intact and fastening securely. The gilt is worn on the high points of both openwork frames and both drop plaques, with a dark patina held in the recesses; the reverses are plainer and darkened. All glass is present: both molded scarabs are intact, all four small intaglio beads are sound and their carving crisp, and both red glass triangles are whole. No missing stones and no cracks.
