This is a particularly appealing family portrait because of the range of ages represented. A teenage boy and older girl stand behind and alongside their parents, while two very young children are seated on their parents' laps. The children's period clothing is especially charming, with the girls wearing light-colored dresses and blouses, several accented by large hair bows. Even the tiny children's little lace-up boots are clearly visible. The father wears a dark suit and has a prominent mustache, while the mother wears a long dark skirt with a light-colored blouse. The family is posed against a traditional painted studio backdrop. An interesting portion of a studio posing chair or piece of furniture can also be seen at the lower right. Based on the clothing, hairstyles and photographic presentation, I would estimate this photograph dates to approximately the late 1890s to early 1900s. The photograph is mounted on an attractive textured gray photographer's board with an embossed multi-line border. Overall size is approximately 7-3/4" x 5-3/4". No names, photographer or studio location are visible, so the family unfortunately remains unidentified. A terrific original piece of turn-of-the-century family and social history, particularly nice for collectors of antique family photography, Victorian/Edwardian clothing, children's portraits and early American photography.    Condition Condition shows expected age-related wear, including scattered spotting/surface marks to the photograph and wear, small losses and bumps along the edges and corners of the mount.
