This vintage hand-carved wooden figure shows a hooded, bearded monk seated and absorbed in an open book. The carving has a stylized, almost Art Deco feel, with deep sculpted folds in the robe and a tall pointed hood framing a serene face with closed eyes. The face, beard, hands, and book pages are finished in a pale cream tone that stands out against the warm reddish-brown robe. Small black bead-style buttons and an inlaid dark cross decorate the front of the robe. The figure sits on an octagonal-cornered wooden base and measures about 8 inches tall, with a base of about 5 by 4.25 inches. It is made of a very lightweight wood, and its flat base and upright form would also let it work as a bookend on a shelf. Handwritten pencil markings on the underside are not very legible. As for condition, there is light wear to the finish, small scuffs and nicks on the edges and hood, some wear to the cream finish on the book and beard, and age-appropriate dust and darkening in the carved recesses.
