The bowl is formed as a large open blossom, with individually shaped petals and pronounced ridges radiating from the center. The glaze is a beautiful blue-green/seafoam turquoise with cream and warm tan burst-like glaze effects and fine darker details throughout. The surface has a particularly interesting tactile quality. In addition to the raised ridges of the petals, there are small textured depressions and irregularities that can actually be felt when running a hand across the glazed surface. These variations give the piece considerably more depth and character than a uniformly smooth glazed bowl. The handmade nature of the piece is visible throughout the sculpted form, glaze and surface treatment. This appears to be an individually made studio or small-pottery piece rather than mass-produced ceramic ware. The underside is hand-incised with what appears to be a “D” above a heart-shaped mark . The glaze remains glossy and attractive.
