Striking pair of vintage Mexican pottery figures inspired by ancient Mesoamerican sculptural traditions. Both depict elaborately adorned seated figures with dramatic headdresses, oversized ear ornaments, necklaces, incised body decoration and stylized bird or animal effigies resting across their laps. The larger figure is especially impressive, with remnants of muted green pigment highlighting the headdress, necklace and chest ornamentation. Both have wonderfully earthy, timeworn surfaces in terracotta, rust, brown and mineral tones that give them tremendous visual presence. One figure is incised “MEXICO” on the reverse, identifying the pair as Mexican-made decorative works rather than being represented as archaeological artifacts.
