It is my understanding that bas relief panels of this size and thickness were made in the mid to late 19th century, as a celebration of national pride and artistry. img{max-width:100%} The Lion of Lucerne Vintage Hand Carved Wood Bas Relief Wall Panel Up for auction is an antique, hand carved, wood, bas relief wall panel, depicting The Dying Lion of Lucerne.  The original sculpture is located in Lucerne, Switzerland, carved into the face of a sandstone cliff in a former quarry.  It depicts a mortally wounded lion, pierced by a spear and collapsed on top of a shield bearing the fleur-de-lis of the French monarchy.  A second shield, bearing the Swiss cross, lies nearby.  The sculpture commemorates the Swiss Guards who were massacred during the French Revolution while defending the Tuileries Palace, in Paris, France, on August 10th, 1792.  This three-dimensional, carved wood panel measures approximately 16.25 by just under 12 inches in size, and is approximately 2 inches deep.  Written along the top edge of the panel is the Latin inscription: "HELVETIORUM FIDEI AC VIRTUTI" which translates: "To the loyalty and bravery of the Swiss".  Underneath the image is: "DIE X AUGUSTI II ET III SEPTEMBRIS MDCCXCII", or the dates of August 10th and September 2nd & 3rd, 1792.  These dates indicate that the monument honors not only those killed in combat on August 10th, but also those who were taken prisoner and then executed without trial during the "September Massacres".  Finally, along the bottom edge is written: "STUDIO C PFYFFER ARTE A THORWALDSEN OPERA L AHORN", which refers to Karl Pfyffer von Altishofen (who originally had the idea for the monument), Bertel Thorwaldsen (who designed the monument), and Lukas Ahorn (the stonemason who carved the original monument).  It is my understanding that bas relief panels of this size and thickness were made in the mid to late 19th century, as a celebration of national pride and artistry.  They were not mass-produced, but rather artisanal homages, often made for patriotic Swiss households or to be given as diplomatic gifts.  On the back side of the panel are only fragments of an article with information about the original sculpture that apparently had been taped onto the wood surface.  Also on the back are two eye hooks with wire, for hanging.
