This is a hand woven French tapestry, made in the early to mid 1900’s, after an 18th century Aubusson verdure design. Labels like this are increasingly scarce and add significant historical interest to the piece. WELCOME TO THE TEXTILE TRUNK! I’ve been collecting antique and vintage textiles for over 25 years, and this piece is a wonderful example of the quality and artistry that first drew me into French tapestry ~ a truly character-filled verdure with that irresistible crooked neck bird that gives the design so much movement and charm. This is a hand woven French tapestry, made in the early to mid 1900’s, after an 18th century Aubusson verdure design. The imagery is rich and traditional, with foliage, landscape elements, and the wonderfully expressive bird whose slightly angled neck is part of what makes this piece so special and visually alive. The tapestry retains its original Le Point de Halluin label, sewn to the reverse, which provides excellent documentation and provenance. Le Point de Halluin was a respected French workshop located in Halluin, France, working in the Flemish weaving tradition and known for producing high-quality revival tapestries inspired by historic Aubusson designs. According to the label, this tapestry is design number 3929, based on an 18th century Aubusson tapestry from the series “Verdure fines.” It also notes that the work was produced by French Master Weavers, recipients of gold medals, and is signed by the artisans P. Roche, P. Vinet, and Delorme. Labels like this are increasingly scarce and add significant historical interest to the piece. The weaving itself is substantial and well executed, with a lovely sense of depth in the foliage and excellent texture throughout. Like many handmade tapestries, I personally love this honest, handmade character and feel it adds to the soul of the piece rather than detracting from it. This tapestry works beautifully as wall art, in a library, dining room, bedroom, or stair hall, and brings instant warmth and history to both traditional and more relaxed interiors. I love giving these historic textiles new life ~ reusing and preserving them is an eco-friendly way to decorate, and a privilege after centuries of survival. This is truly an antique of the future, meant to be enjoyed now and handed down for generations to come. MEASUREMENTS This tapestry measures approximately 130 x 185 cm, which is about 51 x 73 inches. CONDITION This lovely tapestry is in as found vintage condition. There is light overall wear consistent with age and use, along with the natural skew noted above from hand weaving.
