With his hand-drawn smiling face, jaunty top hat, and simple folk-art construction, he captures the whimsical spirit of early Halloween celebrations. Measuring approximately 3 inches tall and 2½ inches across the base, this antique candy container is constructed of cardboard covered in bright orange crepe paper with a black paper hatband. The removable cardboard base allowed treats to be hidden inside, making it both a decoration and party favor. Unlike the more elaborate German die-cut examples, this piece has a delightfully naïve, handmade appearance that gives it tremendous display appeal. These simple paper Halloween novelties were intended to be used for just one season, making surviving examples increasingly difficult to find.
