The "SETO Maneki Neko(瀬戸まねき猫)", which features a slender hunchback just like a real cat, was born in late 1800s by applying the European plaster mold technique used to manufacture ornamental figurines (SETO novelties) for overseas markets.  A raised right hand signifies money, while a left hand entices customers to a business. Eight(八) is a lucky number in Japanese because when you write it in Chinese characters, the shape of the character is wider towards the bottom. This cat is commonly called "Hachiware" because the color of the hair on its head resembles the Chinese character "eight'(八)". Seto-city is one of the world's most renowned and rare production areas, which has continuously been producing pottery for almost 1000 years. In Japan, the word "setomono" refers to “pottery”.
