These boxes, often featuring a hand-shaped base, were produced between approximately 1860 and the 1890s as keepsake prizes for visitors at English fairs. History of Conta & Boehme Establishment: The factory was founded in Pößneck, Thuringia, Germany in 1790. In 1804, it was acquired by Albrecht Wilhelm Ernst Conta and Christian Gotthelf Boehme, who specialized in high-quality porcelain and "fairings"—inexpensive decorative pieces made for export. Peak and Market Reach: By the mid-19th century, the company dominated the market for fairing trinket boxes and figurines, primarily exporting to England.
