This box is heavy despite its size and open pierced work. PIETRA DURA TRINKET BOX & PINK ACCENTS One oval trinket box hand-carved from soapstone and inset with luminous pink stones. Like wood marquetry, the Pietra Dura* art form requires every cut to be precise without error. Only the most experienced and patient craftsman can master the skills necessary to create these little boxes. It takes years to master Pietra Dura while most young artists choose easier trades to apprentice with, all the while losing more of the few elder master tradesmen every year who find themselves without students to pass the Pietra Dura skills down to. It measures 3” long by 2 1/4” wide by 1 1/4” tall, including the lid. For a vintage piece, it is in overall excellent condition. It will be admired and useful for anyone who appreciates the beauty of ancient craftsmanship. This box is heavy despite its size and open pierced work. The design on the lid is stylized geometric piercework in the Indian tradition featuring three marquise-shaped iridescent pink stones. The lid is lifted off to open. The body of the box is circled by a row of the same open piercework, allowing patterned light to decorate the interior. It is uncommon to find hand-carved piercework like this incorporated as a major design element with the usual simple stone inset on the lid.
