This striking, large-scale antique religious sculpture depicts the Bodhisattva Guanyin (Avalokiteshvara) seated in a meditative posture, likely a variation of dhyanasana or rajalilasana. Carved from a single large block of wood, the figure displays traditional iconography, including an ornate, beaded pectoral necklace, flowing monastic robes with deep drapery folds, and an elaborate high chignon (jiamofa). Notably, a small, seated Amitabha Buddha figure is intricately carved directly into the crown/front of the headdress, symbolizing Guanyin's spiritual lineage. The right hand rests down near the knee in a relaxed gesture, while the left hand is raised in a variation of the Vitarka Mudra (intellectual discussion), with the thumb and ring finger touching. Traces of historical polychrome pigment remain across the surface, including subtle remnants of vibrant blue paint in the folds of the lower robes.
