An English Sunderland pink splash-lustre pearlware jug, attributed to the Garrison Pottery of Dixon, Phillips & Co., Sunderland, circa 1855. The rounded globular body rises to a cylindrical collar with a projecting spout and a plain loop handle. The attribution is supported by the two transfer-printed subjects. It depicts Gauntlet, a three-masted iron clipper launched in 1853, based on a contemporary engraving used as the source for this Sunderland transfer. Both panels are set against a cream-white ground with hand-applied pink and copper-purple splash lustre, complemented by lustre bands to the collar, rim and spout. The underside is unmarked, with fine, even crazing and an old collection paper label numbered "170".
