VINTAGE PARIS Original 1969 OIL PAINTING Featuring: Basilica of the Sacré Coeur Place de Tertre Saint-Pierre de Montmartre SIGNED, DATED, AND BEAUTIFULLY FRAMED About the painting: From Gerard Lubbers’ time in Paris, this original oil painting from 1969 captures a moment from the Place du Tertre, a historic town square near the summit of Paris' elevated Montmartre quarter. At the beginning of the 20th century, many painters including Picasso and Modigliani were living there. Lubbers beautifully brushes the cold, empty square (which is typically bustling) and allows us to travel back to the late sixties and feel the brisk air along with the five other people braving the weather. We can hear the footsteps, smell the food, and perhaps sense Lubbers’ cold hands chronicling the peacefulness of it all. Triumphantly the Basilica of the Sacré Coeur towers above and steals the scene, grounding us, humbling us. About the artist, Gerard Lubbers: Born in the Netherlands in 1911, Gerard Lubbers moved to the United States in 1930. In 1942 he entered the army for WW2 service but was discharged for an injury. He studied at the Corcoran School of Art, the Phillips Gallery and Catholic University. A painting he did of President Dwight D. Eisenhower's farm in Gettysburg, Pa., hangs in Blair House, the presidential guest house. Besides his paintings, he was an illustrator in the audio-visual aids division of the State Department when he retired in 1973. He passed away in Virginia in 1994.
