To view this page, enable JavaScript if it is disabled or upgrade your browser.  The earrings are made with 7.5 X 5 mm oval opal cabochons from Ethiopia, the pair having a combined weight of 1.30 carats.  The clarity/grade of the gems is VVS1, eye clean, natural inclusions are visible only with the aid of a 10X's loupe.  Their colour is yellowish orange with green flashes.   The opals have been set in four prong sterling silver basket settings with leverback hooks.   The earrings are delicate, light and airy.  The earrings will definitely not weigh down your ear lobes. Much of opal material is hydrophane, meaning it can soak up water.  If placed in water, the material will momentarily disturb its colour and fire, turning them milky and cloudy.  Once the stones are desiccated , they yield back to their normal state.  What this means is you should not swim or bath with them on.   Ethiopian  opals have a tough characteristic, and they outperform opals from other locations.  Tests by the Gemological Institute of America has shown that this opal is capable of withstanding drops to concrete from four feet without damage.  All other sources failed this drop test.
