Once the stones are desiccated, they yield back to their normal state. Ethiopian opals have a tough characteristic, and they outperform opals from other locations. Welo Ethiopian opals are 5.5 - 6.5 on Mohs' scale of hardness. The earrings are made with 8 X 6 mm faceted oval opals from Ethiopia, a pair having a combined weight of between 1.55 & 1.40 carats.  Opals are often cut en cabochon, these are special, they have been faceted.  The phrase en cabochon (from French: knob) is the term applied to a gemstone with a smooth, domed top, cabochon have no facets. The gems are translucent, because of the layered siliceous jelly that makes up its composition.  Their colour is orange with green flashes.   The opals have been set in six prong sterling silver settings with knurled ear nuts and 10 mm disks.  The disks are essential in holding the large earrings upright on the ear, they distribute & hold the setting in a wide area behind the ear lobe, although they are not heavy.  The nuts can be pushed onto the stem to fit the ear snugly. Much of opal material is hydrophane, meaning it can soak up water.  If placed in water, the material will momentarily disturb its colour and fire, turning them milky and cloudy.  Once the stones are desiccated , they yield back to their normal state.  What this means is you should not swim or bath with them on.   Ethiopian  opals have a tough characteristic, and they outperform opals from other locations.  Tests by the Gemological Institute of America has shown that this opal is capable of withstanding drops to concrete from four feet without damage.  All other sources failed this drop test. Welo Ethiopian  opals are 5.5 - 6.5 on Mohs' scale of hardness.  Photos have been enlarged to show detail using LED lighting.  They are photographed next to a dime for size reference. Inside the gift box, the jewelry is placed inside an airtight plastic bag with a 1" X 1" anti-tarnish tab.  This is the same technology used by NASA, The Guggenheim Museum, The British Royal Mint and jewelry manufacturers worldwide.  The tab provides protection from tarnish for up to 12 months.  It does not leave deposits on items it protects.  It is non-toxic, non-abrasive, and will not scratch metal or gemstones.   It is recommended to clean your opal jewelry with a dry soft cloth to gently remove dirt and buildup.  Opals , like all your other jewelry, should be stored in a separate compartment to prevent them from scratching each other.  Earrings arrive in a padded gift box and are perfect for storage.  Even just keeping them in the included air tight plastic envelope with the anti-tarnish tab will protect them. It is called .925 because it is an alloy that is 925 parts out of a thousand silver. It is allowed for the other 75 parts to be other metals (usually copper) to enhance the strength, because pure silver is very soft and not structurally strong enough for many jewelry applications. Other "silver settings" come with different elements in their composition. German/Nickel Silver, which is an alloy consisting of copper, zinc and nickel, contains no silver. Most people have allergic reactions to nickel. Other settings may be called Mexican Silver, Indian Silver, Montana Silver, Pewter, Tin, Pot or Base Metal or simply silver. The content of these are less clear and do not guarantee the quantity or silver content. .925 is the best form of silver. It is durable and has a high sheen.
