Original ninth-plate ambrotypes, Civil War era, ca. 1858 - 1865 cased glass ambrotype with gilt mat. Is the collodion-on-glass process with a dark backing so the image reads positive, housed in a leather-covered wood case with a gilt nonpareil mat and brass preserver.  Sizing:   Ninth Plate (approx. 2 ½ " H × 2" W -visible picture opening inside the gold/brass mat); 3 ½ H x 3”W -  actual size of frame ambrotype Subjects : (Period accurate 1858 - 1865) Seated  gentleman -  Classic head-and-shoulder/three-quarter studio portrait pose, faint cheek tint, nonpareil mat, original case Cases & mounts Pressed/embossed decorative leather-covered wood cases. Hook-and-eye clasps present. -  one is missing the hook. Original glued leather/cloth spine hinges are perished  as typically found at 160+ years. Interior pads show normal wear; see photos. Condition: Normal light speckling and dust under cover glass; images remain clear with pleasing contrast. No broken cover glass noted. Wear to leather and velvet.  ALL details are spoken by view of pictures. Dating Late-1850s to early-1860s based on clothing, hair, and mounts (Civil War era). Provenance Private collection; no inscriptions or photographer labels visible.
