Please click on the pictures to see more details. Antique ninth-plate cased image of a bearded man, circa 1860 to 1868, in a leather case measuring approximately 2-1/4 by 2-3/4 inches. The sitter is a young man with a thick dark beard and mustache and a full head of wavy hair brushed up and back, wearing a dark frock coat with wide lapels, a white shirt and a dark bow tie, looking straight into the camera with the level, steady gaze that makes portraits of this era so compelling. The image is set behind a stamped brass mat with a scalloped opening and floral corner ornaments, surrounded by a velvet-covered inner frame and a gilt preserver. The case is a wooden book-form case covered in black pebbled leather with a gilt-tooled border on both covers and inside the lid, a round brass clasp on the spine, and a cream moiré silk pad in the lid. The full beard, the wide-lapelled coat and the plain black case with its gilt tooling all point to the Civil War years and just after, when cased ambrotypes and tintypes were the everyday portrait format for soldiers and civilians alike before the paper carte de visite took over entirely. Ninth-plate images were the smallest and most affordable size and were made to be carried or mailed home, and a great many were made for men leaving for the war. There is no uniform or inscription here to tie the sitter to service, so he is offered simply as a fine period portrait of the era. Condition is honest antique, sold as found. The case has heavy wear: the leather is rubbed and scuffed with losses at the corners and edges, the covering is lifting along the spine and the bottom edge, and the covers are loose at the hinge though still attached.
