This is an antique German stoneware beer stein features a plain cream-colored body and a domed pewter lid with a ball thumb-lift, resembling 19th-century tavern tankards from Villeroy & Boch. * Body: Smooth, salt-glazed or glazed stoneware in an off-white or cream tone with a simple incised line near the base. * Lid: Conical pewter lid fitted with a traditional multi-pin hinge and a spherical ball thumb-piece. * Handle: Sturdy applied ceramic loop handle matching the body's glaze. Maker & Factory Marks * The Green Mercury Mark: The green stamped emblem featuring the Roman god Mercury's winged helmet above the banner text "VILLEROY & BOCH / METTLACH" was primarily utilized by the factory between 1874 and 1909. * "Made in Germany": The inclusion of this phrase points directly to a production date after 1891, which is when the U.S. enacted the McKinley Tariff Act requiring imported goods to clearly display their country of origin. Production Identification * Mold / Form Number: The incised four-digit number 2189 is the official Mettlach mold identifier. According to the Beer Stein Library, mold number 2189 represents a 0.25-liter pottery or stoneware body style. This specific blank was frequently used by the factory as a base canvas for various transfer-printed designs, tavern scenes, or custom merchant orders. Estimated Age Given that the green mark places it pre-1909 and the export text places it post-1891, this stein was manufactured during the peak historic era of the factory, roughly between 1892 and 1905.
