View Antique 19th C Indian Rajasthan Painted Dowry Chest polychrome Trunk with current marketplace pricing, condition, product images and item details. Impressive antique 19th century Indian painted dowry or storage chest, likely originating from Rajasthan or Gujarat. Form: Dowry / storage chest. Circa: 19th century 31 x 29 x 54. There is deterioration and loss to the wood along portions of the upper front edge, clearly pictured. Impressive antique 19th century Indian painted dowry or storage chest, likely originating from Rajasthan or Gujarat. This substantial hand-crafted chest features a wonderfully elaborate architectural façade constructed with numerous applied turned wood moldings retaining old red, yellow, black and orange polychrome decoration. The front is arranged in repeating geometric panels ornamented with embossed metal mounts, square framed metal inserts and decorative brass-tone floral rosettes. Especially appealing are the tall turned corner posts and the small bottle-shaped turned finials positioned along the upper edge. The chest retains its hinged plank top and decorative metal hasp. The interior is large and relatively plain, providing an interesting contrast to the highly ornamented exterior. Constructed using thick, hand-worked wooden boards with visible irregularities, old tool marks, shrinkage, wear and age-related surface character. The surviving painted decoration has substantial rubbing and losses, producing an excellent untouched folk-art appearance. The chest shows considerable age and use, including cracks, separations, losses, old nail holes, surface wear, missing/damaged decorative metal inserts, some of the mirrors are damaged broken or lost , losses to the painted decoration and other age-related imperfections. There is deterioration and loss to the wood along portions of the upper front edge, clearly pictured. Hardware and components may have been repaired or replaced during the chest's long working life. Please examine all photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition description. A highly decorative example of traditional Indian folk furniture with tremendous color, texture and presence.
