Description

View Antique Henry Disston & Sons 24" Hand Saw 8 PT Crosscut Wheat Carved Nib 1900s with current marketplace pricing, condition, product images and item details. The nib at the toe is intact,a feature dropped after 1928. The handle carries the old-style four-position saw nut mounting and full wheat carving on both cheeks, cut by hand rather than machine-pressed. Henry Disston & Sons of Philadelphia, straight-back panel hand saw with a hand-carved wheat-pattern handle. WHAT THE SAW TELLS YOU The brass keystone medallion reads H. DISSTON & SONS / PHILAD'A with flanking stars — the wording Disston used before 1917. The nib at the toe is intact, a feature dropped after 1928. The handle carries the old-style four-position saw nut mounting and full wheat carving on both cheeks, cut by hand rather than machine-pressed. The plate has a straight back and the teeth are filed crosscut at 8 points per inch, which is 7 teeth per inch counted tip to tip. The handle is a dense reddish hardwood consistent with the applewood Disston used on its carved lines, though I cannot confirm the species and am not claiming it as fact. I am not assigning a model number. The acid etch is gone, and I would rather state what is observable than guess at a pattern. Collectors who know this line will draw their own conclusion from the medallion, the carving, and the nut arrangement. THE OWNER'S STAMP A worn two-letter stamp is punched into the handle cheek, just below the upper saw nut. It reads clearly as a mark but not confidently as specific letters — photographed close up so you can judge it yourself. I left it alone. It belongs to the saw's history. MEASUREMENTS 24" nominal factory length, a panel-saw size. The toothline currently measures approximately 23-1/2", consistent with a century of sharpening. The nib sits roughly 2-1/4" back from the toe — factory spacing, and quiet evidence the plate was never shortened. A cut-down saw loses the nib or strands it far from the tip. CONDITION Cleaned and oiled, not refinished. Two of the four saw nut positions are bare holes, missing their hardware, and a tight crack runs from one of those holes through the handle cheek. Even so, the handle sits tight against the plate with no play or wobble in hand — American-made craftsmanship from Disston's Philadelphia works, built well enough that missing hardware has not loosened it. The etch is no longer readable and the plate carries 100+ years of dark oxidation and staining on both faces. The plate is straight and the teeth are complete. Every flaw is photographed. Sold as a collectible antique, not a tuned working saw. If intended for use, sharpening and setting is recommended, as expected of a tool this age. Ships securely in a rigid box sized for the full length, with the toothline guarded. No odor — smoke-free, pet-free, climate-controlled storage. Condition: Used.
