A fine pair of late Meiji Japanese Satsuma vases, signed Kinzan and decorated in the highly desirable Thousand Butterflies pattern. This is one of the most visually engaging Satsuma designs, with the entire surface covered in dense hand-painted butterfly decoration, polychrome enamels and rich gilt detail. The vases have an elegant baluster shape with flared necks, gilt rims and raised mask-form side handles. The cream crackle glaze, extensive gilding and repeated butterfly motifs create a strong decorative effect, making the pair an excellent centrepiece for a refined interior, display cabinet, mantelpiece or collector’s arrangement. The bases are marked Satsuma and signed Kinzan beneath the Shimazu crest.
