It was one of several porcelain manufactories established in the German principalities during the eighteenth century following Meissen's example. Although ownership passed through several hands over the following century and a half, the factory's identity was always linked to finely modeled porcelain figures. By the mid-nineteenth century, Volkstedt had become closely associated with a particularly labor-intensive form of decoration on those figures known as Dresden lace. The process involved real lace, dipped in liquid porcelain slip and fired so the fabric burned away, leaving behind a fired ceramic replica of the pattern. The technique became one of the factory's signature outputs, prized for its intricacy and, in equal measure, for its fragility. Production continued through the upheavals of the twentieth century, including the postwar period, when the factory operated under East German state control as VEB Älteste Volkstedter Porzellanmanufaktur while continuing many of its historic figural lines. Following German reunification, the factory was acquired by the Royally Privileged Porcelain Factory Tettau, and its original buildings were restored to their eighteenth-century appearance in the mid-2000s. It continues to operate today under a name — Älteste Volkstedter Porzellanfabrik — that has identified it as Volkstedt's oldest porcelain works for more than two centuries.
