It is marked "PAT'D JUNE 17 79" on the little dovetail on the left side as shown with PAT'D very faint, "BAILEY PATENT AUG 31, 1858 AUG 6, 1867" inside the recessed brass adjusting nut, " STANLEY RULE & LEVEL CO" in the little semi-circle on the iron, and "L BAILEY'S PATENT DEC 24, 1867" on the chip breaker. You are bidding on one Stanley Rule & Level Company Number 13 circular wood plane as pictured. It is marked "PAT'D JUNE 17 79" on the little dovetail on the left side as shown with PAT'D very faint, "BAILEY PATENT AUG 31, 1858 AUG 6, 1867" inside the recessed brass adjusting nut, " STANLEY RULE & LEVEL CO" in the little semi-circle on the iron, and "L BAILEY'S PATENT DEC 24, 1867" on the chip breaker. Also owner "OFS" stamped his initials on the top of the sole at the back end (visible at the bottom of the 7th picture). Note that this plane has the pre-lateral frog. And the keyhole on the iron is at the top. The June 17, 1879 patent is patent 216,577, which was granted to Samuel D Sargent of New Britain, Connecticut, for his design of the dovetailed lugs that attach the sole to the body. This would be the Type 3 of this plane, made from about 1879 to 1884, which is before the lateral lever was patented in 1884, but after the sole was attached with rivets instead of screws which changed at the same time as the changes to the design from Sargent's patent. Overall length of the steel sole is about 10-3/16". Width of the iron is about 1-3/4", and overall length of the iron is very close to 7". Condition is very good, other than the pitting on the bottom of the flexible sole. The top of the sole has some modest patina, and a few tiny spots of very light pitting. The body retains the majority of its japanning, and has a few tiny casting flaws mostly around the oval opening on top. There is a bit of residue from a label that was attached to the middle of the left side (a collector's label, why couldn't he have put it on a bare steel surface?) The frog has some casting roughness, and would benefit from a cleaning. The iron and chip breaker are reasonably clean, with some scratches and just a few hints of pitting. The lever cap is very good, better with a cleaning, and the lower edge is intact. Except as noted, there are no cracks or chips or chunks missing from any of the castings, and everything including the adjustment of the sole operates properly.
