This one does carry rust: it runs along one side edge of the blade, shows on both the face and the back, and has left brown staining on the bed of the dai where the blade sat. The dai itself is clean and the sole is unworn. Please review all photos carefully — the close-ups of the blade edge in particular — and judge the condition for yourself. You will receive the exact item shown. An authentic Tadao (忠生) 42 mm Japanese hand plane, crafted in Banshu Miki, Hyogo Prefecture — one of Japan's most respected blade-making regions. The blade is forged from Yasuki Blue Paper Steel (Aogami) , prized among craftsmen for its exceptional edge retention, toughness, and capacity to take a razor-sharp finish. The face of the blade has been ground bright, with patches of the original black forge scale left across the top, and it carries the maker's 忠生 stamp in a cartouche with a 青 (blue steel) mark alongside. It is a double-blade plane (二枚刃) — the main blade works with a matching chipbreaker, held by a brass retaining pin. The dai (body) is quarter-sawn White Oak (白樫 / Shira-kashi) , with the ray fleck showing clearly on the end grain, and it still carries the プロ専用 (professional use) label and the 42 m/m size plate. The plane reached us still bagged in its storage box and we have not cleaned or polished any of it. Rust is present on this piece: it runs along one side edge of the blade, shows on both the face and the back, and a few specks reach onto the ground bevel; it has also left brown staining on the bed of the dai where the blade rested. Away from that edge the ground faces are bright and the cutting edge is clean. The dai shows no cracks, the sole is unworn, and the mouth is as the dai maker left it, with a pencil mark from the fitting still on the bed. This is a one-of-a-kind item with no restock available. Setup Required Important — Not Ready to Use Out of the Box This particular kanna requires initial setup and adjustment before professional use. Please read carefully before purchasing. Blade Fitting & Chipbreaker Adjustment: The blade and chipbreaker must be properly fitted and tuned to each other before use. Do not force the blade into the dai — improper insertion can crack or distort the wooden body. Dai Adjustment (Dai-naoshi): The sole of the dai requires truing and tuning to ensure correct blade projection and surface contact. This step demands experience with Japanese planes and appropriate hand tools. Dai Maintenance: The White Oak dai is subject to seasonal wood movement.
