Antique German Mohair Teddy Bear c. 1910s 14.5” Shoe Button Eyes Wonderful early antique mohair teddy bear dating to approximately the 1910s–1920s, with a sweet face and the kind of classic look collectors love in an early German bear. He measures approximately 14.5 inches long when fully outstretched and is a jointed teddy with long limbs, a nicely shaped muzzle, black embroidered nose and mouth, and black shoe-button type eyes. He has warm golden-brown mohair and a very appealing, timeworn appearance. This is a really nice example overall, with good presence and a charming expression. He retains a pleasing amount of his original mohair, with expected age-related thinning and wear throughout, including to the face, ears, limbs, and along some seams. His paw pads have been reinforced at some point, and one paw does not have claw marks, while the others show black stitched claw detail. There is also general wear consistent with age and handling. I do not see a surviving maker’s button, tag, or other identification, so I am offering him as an unidentified early German teddy bear. Even without a firm maker attribution, he has a very nice early look and displays beautifully. Measurements: Approximately 14.5” long when outstretched. Condition: Good antique condition with age-appropriate mohair wear and thinning, reinforced paw pads, and one paw lacking claw stitching.
