Historical Origin & Date Origin : Made in Zagorsk, historically the primary heartland of Russian matryoshka craft. Era : Because it is inscribed with "г. Загорск" rather than "Сергиев Посад," it was produced prior to 1991 , when the Soviet government restored the city's pre-revolutionary name. Most fine ethnographic sets of this type date from the late 1970s through the late 1980s. Format : It is the outermost figure of a 4-piece nesting set ("4 места"). Subject & Costume Design Region : The doll depicts the traditional folk dress of Kargopol Uyezd (Arkhangelsk province in Northern Russia). Northern Russian folk costumes are famous among collectors for their rich gold embroidery and pearl-work headdresses. The "Doroga" Costume: The bottom notes кост. «Дорога» (costume "Doroga" / "Road" / or fine northern silk damask, historically called dorogi). Headwear & Garments: Under her yellow floral shawl, she wears a decorated northern headpiece adorned with pearl-like dotting, typical of Arkhangelsk regional dress. Her sleeves and apron show intricate geometric patterns and scrolling gold leaf/bronze-toned paintwork over a dark skirt. Attribute : She is carrying a glazed ceramic milk jug (gorshok or krinka), a common pastoral touch in classic Soviet-era folk sets.
