A pair of Egyptian Revival drop earrings of the 1920s, from the wave of Egyptian-themed costume jewelry that followed the opening of Tutankhamun's tomb in 1922. Each earring is built on a die-struck gilt brass plaque bearing a pharaoh's head in the striped nemes headcloth, framed by scrolls and a fluted fan and set with pink and clear rhinestones. Below hangs a large faceted drop of amethyst glass in a die-struck cap carrying a raised scroll motif on the front, plain on the reverse. The pair carries no mark of any kind. The construction - the die-struck brass, the findings, the rhinestone settings and the pressed glass - matches marked Czechoslovakian pieces that came in with it, so the origin is attributed rather than proven. SIZE (approximate): 4 1/2 in. overall, measured from the top of the ear wire to the bottom of the drop. 7/8 in. at the widest point. STYLE: Egyptian Revival / Art Deco. Gilt brass with glass and rhinestone. AGE (approximate): 1920s-1930s. CONDITION: Very Good. Pierced lever-back findings, both intact and fastening securely. The gilt is well preserved across the fronts of both pharaoh plaques, with the nemes stripes and the scrollwork crisp; the reverses are worn, with pale setting residue showing through the piercings. All pink and clear rhinestones are present, bright and secure in their settings. Both faceted amethyst glass drops are clean and chip-free with sharp facets. No missing stones and no cracks.
