A pair of Egyptian Revival drop earrings of the 1920s. Below hangs a long tapering cone cap decorated with rows of raised dots and a large faceted drop of steel-blue glass. Each earring is built on a die-struck plaque of a PHARAOH HEAD in a striped nemes headcloth, shown in profile and flanked by two large downswept fluted ""wings"", set with red and clear rhinestones. Below hangs a long tapering cone cap decorated with rows of raised dots and a large faceted drop of steel-blue glass. The pair carries no mark of any kind. The construction - the die-struck brass, the findings, the stone settings and the pressed glass - matches marked Czechoslovakian pieces that came in with it, so the origin is attributed rather than proven. SIZE (approximate): 4 in. overall, measured from the top of the ear wire to the bottom of the drop. 1 3/8 in. at the widest point. STYLE: Egyptian Revival / Art Deco. Gilt brass with steel-blue glass and rhinestone. AGE (approximate): 1920s-1930s. CONDITION: Good, with a heavy dark patina. Pierced lever-back findings, both intact and fastening securely. THE METAL HAS DARKENED OVER THE WHOLE OF BOTH PIECES - it reads near-black, with gilt surviving only in the deepest relief. This is aged surface rather than loose tarnish and it has been left as found; it is the defining feature of the piece and the photographs show it plainly. All red and clear rhinestones are present and secure. Both steel-blue faceted drops are intact with crisp facets and no chips. No missing stones and no cracks.
